Old Albums

I've been wrestling with what I should do with the many old albums that we have. Today I tried to see if I could digitize them and my initial research indicates that I can.

I was able to play our old Technics turn table through the iMic, but I had to crank the gain in Amadeus II all the way to maximum and I had the volume on my external speakers just about maxed out. I never bothered with a RIAA preamp a few years ago when we bought the tuner without a built-in preamp stage. And I really need one, so I poked around a little bit. An inexpensive amplifier seemed reasonable.

Whoa! These critters are expensive, and people still seem to favor tubes for the high end equipment. I don't think I'm going to worry about it that much.

I've found one that has an RIAA compliant amplifier, a ground connector, RCA in/out and mini-plug out for about $50 with shipping (and that's the only one I found in that price range) so I'm going to try it.

Speaking of Amadeus, I have been pretty happy with it. I used SoundEdit 16 for years, occasionally for recording, but much more often for converting sound files from one format to another. Since starting to use Amadeus, I've been doing more playing with it's recording capabilities for things like Jon's songs. It's a fun break from the other reasons I end up in front of the computer.

I have more time than money, so my friend, Tania asked me to find out how she could put a value price on her old albums. For she has lots and needs to liquidate her assets. Could you point me in the right direction. We are currently working on a list. Thank you

Sincerely, Valerie

I'm not the source you are looking for, unfortunately.

I'm more of an accidental collector and want to convert the dusty collection we have into something more modern so that I can ditch the vinyl entirely.

You might wish to investigate selling the collection in toto on the various auction sites. Be prepared for a disappointment price wise unless there are a lot of pre-1970 originals.

I have hundreds of old records I would like to sell. Most of these are classical, operas, broadway shows, some easy listening. These include items such as complete works of Mozart, albums by many of the more famous orchestras and singers. Many are box sets. Nearly all are in excellent condition. Where do I go?

The secret to buying or selling is to contact the dealers that specialize in your favourite recorded product. The Record and CD Collector's Directory provides full details on every major American and Canadian dealer of quality merchandise.

The directory features two completely separate indexes. One index is by recorded format. The other index is by musical (or other) category. Using one index or both the reader can quickly find all the dealers that specialize in the product you want to buy (or sell).

It lists all types of music in every format, all types of music collectibles and provides you with all best contacts you need including many who rarely advertise and some who never advertise. It is the only book of its type anywhere. (Published in 1995)

I have a lot of old albums. Some have never been played. A lot of them say not for resale, for promotional use only. Can someone tells me what this mean. I got them from an uncle who used to be a dj.
